FOG ADVISORS CEO Discusses Campus
Security
May

(Oak Brook,
IL) Jeff Kedrowski, CPP, CEO and
Principal Consultant of FOG ADVISORS Security Management and Public Safety
Consultants, co-presented a discussion on college campus safety for students
and parents at the Union Church of Hinsdale in Hinsdale, Illinois. The
session was led by Rev. Scott Matheney, Chaplain for Elmhurst College in nearby
Elmhurst, Illinois.
"With media
coverage of incidents on college and university campuses across the country,
parents and students arrive on campus with a new set of expectations, questions
and concerns," noted Rev. Matheney.
"With every
incident in the news, responsible college and university administrators take a
fresh look at safety and security measures on their own campuses," added
Kedrowski. "Several years back, when
fires in campus housing became a concern due to a number of fatal fires, many
institutions responded by adding
sprinkler systems to older buildings which did not require them when the buildings
were constructed. Now, we are seeing institutions
take steps to install emergency notification systems, and to revise emergency
response plans to address the latest threats of violence." Kedrowski also took time to describe for
parents and students the requirements of the Clery Act, a Federal law which
obligates colleges and universities to publish standardized crime statistics
and security information each year.
"The Clery Act statistics give students an opportunity to compare
instances of major crimes between institutions, and allows students to have the
information they need to be better informed and therefore better able to avoid
being a victim." For the benefit of
worried parents, Kedrowski did comment that campuses are still statistically
safer than the surrounding communities, and the most common crime on campuses
nationwide is still simple theft.
